Distrib Films acquires ‘Insensibles’ New Spanish chiller rolls in Spain By JOHN HOPEWELL Exclusive: MADRID — Paris-based Distrib Films has taken French theatrical rights to »Insensibles, » the debut of Spaniard Juan Carlos Medina.Distrib Films plans to release »Insensibles » fall 2012. Wild Bunch will put out »Insensibles » on DVD via Wild Side Films. The Distrib Films deal marks one of the last financing pieces on a buzzed-about chiller that went into production this week, shooting in Huesca, Girona and Tarragona. Produced by Spain’s Roxbury and A Contracorriente, which distributes in Spain, France’s Les Films d’Antoine and Tobina Film, and Portugal’s Fado Filmes, »Insensibles » also exploits a growing French-Catalonian production axis. It shoots in Catalan — not only an official Spanish language but also a regional French language. As a France-Catalonia co-prod, mixing French and Catalan crew and cast, this opens a lot of doors in France, improving Gallic TV acquisitions prices, said Roxbury’s Miguel Angel Faura. Though lead-produced out of Spain, »Insensibles » draws deep on French resources , one key way forward for a cash-strapped Spanish industry. Elle Driver has international sales rights; Canal Plus French pay TV rights. Pic is bank-rolled by French bank Natixis Coficine, with financing under-written by French culture industry financier Ifcic via an EU Media Program Production Guarantee Fund. »Insensibles » taps Cofimage 23 French Sofica tax coin. Amer (literally meaning ‘bitter’) focuses on three key sensual moments in Ana’s life set against the oppressive backdrop of the imposing family home. A sense of unease slowly builds to an erotic and terrifying finale where the line between reality and Ana’s fantasies becomes blurred. AMER This Franco-Belgian import has been causing quite a stir on the international festival circuit, and rightfully so: it’s a supremely confident nu-giallo that plays like a love letter to the master himself, Dario Argento – and is arguably a finer Argento flick than the ones Dario himself has been producing of late. Don’t mistake Amer for mere pastiche, however: working on a minimal budget, filmmakers Bruno Forzani and Hélène Cattet have crafted a sensual, stylistic tour-de-force, a tale of obsession and, of course, black-gloved murder played over three different periods in the life of a haunted young woman, played at various ages by Cassandra Fosset, Charlotte Eugene-Guibbaud and Marie Bos. Virtually dialogue-free, Amer is bold, bloody and enigmatic to a fault, offering any number of sublime (and subliminal) pleasures, from the expressionistic cinematography and deeply immersive sound design to the pitch-perfect vintage giallo soundtrack. Posted: Mon., Oct. 11, 2010, 7:15am PT Roxbury boards ‘Painless’ Thriller set for first quarter 2011 shoot By JOHN HOPEWELL, EMILIO MAYORGA SITGES, Spain — Miguel Angel Faura’s Roxbury Pictures has boarded Juan Carlos Medina’s « Insensibles » (Painless), one of the most-buzzed about psychological thrillers coming out of Catalonia. With Roxbury on board and nearly all financing pieces now in place, « Painless » looks well on track for a first quarter 2011 shoot. Paris-based Elle Driver, which has a strong line in Spanish-language titles, is selling international rights. It saw a spectacular flurry of early pre-sales when « Painless » was first brought on to the market in 2008. Project’s originators, two go-ahead French companies — Antoine Simkine’s Les Films d’Antoine and Francois Cognard’s Tobina Film — will produce from France. Barcelona-based Roxbury lead produces, putting up 60% of pic’s Euros3.2 million ($4.5 million) budget. Portugal’s Fado Filmes has a 10% participation and the French co-producers the rest, Faura said at the Sitges Festival. Simkine, Cognard and Faura exec produce. A Contracorriente has Spanish theatrical distribution rights. Wild Bunch has home entertainment right in France, and Canal Plus and Cine Cinema share French pay TV rights. « Painless » has also pulled down Eurimages funding. « Painless » is written by Medina and Spaniard Luis Berdejo. Apart from directing Kevin Costner in « The New Daughter, » Berdejo has proved a seminal influence on Barcelona-based genre production, co-writing « REC » with Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza. RENCONTRE Projection en présence des réalisateurs Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani Ana est confrontée à la peur et au désir à trois moments clefs de sa vie. Un voyage charnel entre frissons et fantasmes. AMER n’est pas réservé aux initiés, il s’adresse à tous les curieux en quête de nouvelles surprise dans les salles obscures… Une oeuvre troublante et sensuelle rare : plus qu’un film, une expérience unique en son genre. Une étrange demeure. Une malédiction et une mystérieuse présence. Une petite fille apeurée observant à travers les trous de la serrure. Un couple torturé. Un beau cinémascope…et la musique de Morricone et Cipriani… Tous les ingrédients sont réunis pour attirer dans ses filets l’amateur d’inquiétante étrangeté.
